Computer Usage Policy

Computer Usage Policy

**The purpose of this course blog is to serve as a practice exercise in EDM 510 Micro-computing Systems in Education. Instructions for your participation are provided in the assignment.

As you are aware, each student is given a Chromebook to use for the school year. You may not take your Chromebook home, but while you are in school it is your responsibility as a student to keep up with and take care of your Chromebook. As a class, we need to design a computer usage policy. A computer usage policy is a short list of guidelines that will ensure you are taking the proper precautions when using your Chromebook. Your assignment for this blog is to suggest at least three rules that you think we should include in our classroom computer usage policy. Once we finish discussing all the suggestions, we will decide on what we think the most important rules should be. We will then post our policy in the classroom as a reminder.

  1. Jeana I agree that there need to be set rules for computer usage especially with how smart children are today with technology. Here is my list of suggested rules:

    1. Tell a teacher if there is anything that pops up or is unusual on your computer screen immediately.
    2. Never share any personal information on the internet unless supervised by a teacher.
    3. Do not change, delete or rename any files without permission first.

    1. I definitely need to include never share any personal information. I tend to focus on taking care of the computer but in the society we live I agree that is a rule we need to include! Thanks!

  2. Jeana, I think it is a great idea that you are including your students when making the rules! My personal experience with this is that students tend to follow the rules more closely when they are involved in the decision-making process.

    1. Take care of the equipment- it is very expensive!
    2. Only use secure sites- check for the logo near the URL
    3. Only for academic use- no social media or games!

    1. I usually allow my students to be the ones to suggest the rules so that they won't feel like they are just rules that I came up with. It also shows me that they know the right and wrong way to handle their computer. Thanks for your suggestions!

  3. Setting rules for computer usage as a class is an excellent idea. I think that by allowing the students to participate, they will feel that they are "in control" of their learning and will be more likely to participate and obey the rules established.
I would suggest the following three rules for the Computer Usage Policy:

    1. Respect your computer (handle with care, keep in its proper places etc.)
    2. Computer is for academic use only; non-education games and social media for personal usage is not acceptable.
    3. Only secure and educational sights should be visited.

    1. Respect your computer is a great way to summarize so many things! That is a great way to combine many issues that have to be addressed with students. Thanks!
